Une première œuvre « Le Gisant » avait été installée dès 1963. Elle est désormais intégrée à un mémorial plus conséquent.
En 2009 à l’occasion du cinquantenaire de la catastrophe de Malpasset un mémorial fut érigé près de l’amphithéâtre romain, là où la ville avait été durement touchée par la vague destructrice et où « Le Gisant » avait été préalablement installé. Le monument de Michel Mourier se compose de plusieurs stèles où l’on retrouve les noms des victimes de la tragédie. Au centre, plusieurs colonnes sont dressées et on peut y lire la célèbre phrase écrite par le Général De Gaulle au lendemain de la tragédie « Que Fréjus renaisse ! ».
